The Supreme Court surprised same-sex marriage advocates on Monday morning, the first day of its new session, by declining to hear five states' appeals of pending gay marriage cases. The states, Indiana, Utah, Oklahoma, Virginia and Wisconsin, had been seeking to prohibit same-sex marriages.
